In Memoriam: Brother Justinian Collins

 

Denis Finbarr Collins was born near Bantry on 13 January 1922. He was the youngest of five children, three boys and two girls, born to Martha (nee Shanahan) and Cornelius Collins.He is predeceased by his parent and his siblings.He attended the local national school at Gort Ui Chluana until 1935 when he came to Colaiste Muire, Douglas. Having completed the Leaving Cert he entered the novitiate in Mount St. Joseph in 1939 where he was given the name Justinian. After first profession in 1941, he was sent to De La Salle Training College in Waterford.

On completing his teacher training in 1943, Justinian was posted to Birr. He made his final profession in 1944. Two years later he was transferred to the South Monastery. In September 1948 he moved to Mount St. Joseph in poor health. In January 1949 he entered Heatherside Sanatorium. After eight months there he was moved to St. Patrick’s Hospital, Cork, where he spent three months before returning to the sanatorium. In April 1950 he was admitted to Mallow Hospital. After a year and seven months in hospital, it was back to Heatherside Sanatorium for a further five months. In all, he had been ill for nearly four years. On leaving Heatherside for the last time in April 1952 he was sent to Kinsale to recuperate.

In August 1953 Justinian was transferred to Bray. Six years later he was sent to Milltown. After only one year there he was moved to Greenmount. A year after that, in August 1961, he was back in Mount St. Joseph where he spent the next eight years, first as Bursar and Assistant Novice Master(1961-1963), and then as Novice Master (1963-1969) and Superior (1964-1968).

In August 1969 he was transferred to Colaiste Therese, Greenmount, where he remained until that place was sold in 1989.He taught in Scoil Mhuire na nGras until he became principal in 1979, a post he held until his retirement in 1987.

Justinian served on the Congregation Leadership Team for two terms. He was 2ndAssistant from 1969 to 1975, and Vicar General from 1975 to 1981, both terms with Br. Felim O’ Regan as Congregation Leader.

When Colaiste Therese closed in 1989 Justinian moved to Mardyke House, where he spent five years.  In 1994 he went to Maiville, where he remained (apart from the time he spent in Mount St. Joseph while Maiville was being renovated) until he went to St. Padre Pio Nursing Home, Churchtown, in 2014.

Funeral Arrangement: Rosary on Saturday 07 April at 5.15pm in the Community Chapel Maiville, Removal to Turners Cross Church at 9.30am on Monday 09 April, Requiem Mass at 10am, followed by burial at Brothers Cemetery, Mount St. Joseph’s, Blarney Street, Cork.
